Creating Independence Impact Council:
Long Term Outcome: Residents of Montgomery County have the resources they need to live independently, make wise choices and follow avenues that enhance personal growth.
#1 priority – Moving People Out of Poverty
#3 priority – Helping People Cope With Challenging Situations and Developing Resiliency

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'
Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The Creating Independence Council focuses the energy of United Way volunteers and resources on helping others achieve independence.
For each individual to be able to provide food and safe shelter for themselves and those dependent on them, is the first step toward the ability to contribute - in turn - to others.”

Valerie Vogt, Council Chair

Project Independence - The Mission Northeast has completed the 3rd year of a grant made available by MCUW to provide job training and financial training to assist families in "Moving Out of Poverty".

68 or 75.6% of all households completed course work and/or licensing tests.

  • 39 Adults or 66% completed their education.
  • 358 people (adults and children) in 90 households were touched by "Project Independence".

The Creating Independence Impact Council has awarded an extension of the program to The Mission Northeast.  Click here for a Real Life Story.

The council, in 2010, approved funding to pilot a project in East Montgomery County utilizing a curriculum called "Aha!" that was developed by Ruby Payne, a nationally recognized expert in moving people out of poverty.  Click here for a Success Story.
