Montgomery County United Way's program, Success By 6, is a nationwide network of local and state coalitions that address the root problems that prevent children from entering school prepared to succeed.

  • The period of life from birth to age 6 offers a crucial window of opportunity to establish a foundation for success in school and life.
  • Children in this age group are dependent on their parents to offer early learning experiences that prepare them to succeed in school.
  • 46% of kindergarteners start school with one or more educational risk factors.
  • Economically disadvantaged children enter kindergarten one to two years behind in language and other skills important to school success.
  • Parents feel unprepared.  How competent a parent feels can be a major factor in the parent’s support of their child’s development.

Montgomery County United Way’s Success By 6 initiative began its local start in 2001 through an $80,000 grant awarded through United Way America’s Bank of America early childhood education grant.  Conroe Independent School District Title I campuses were targeted with the assistance of Superintendent Dr. Don Stockton and MCUW Volunteer Lucinda Owen.  Success By 6 is now offered in two Conroe ISD elementary campuses and two Montgomery ISD elementary campuses as well as Met-Head Start campuses in Conroe and Willis.

The Success By 6 Committee meets monthly to promote early childhood education in Montgomery County.  Look for news regarding Success By 6 Summer Reading Program.
